Gia Lai province’s agricultural sector, endowed with favourable soil and cultivating conditions, empowered by advanced technologies, provided with highly productive crops and livestock and replaced outdated farming practices with modern ones, has made a lot of impressive breakthroughs with many crops and livestock such as Chu Se pepper and Ha Tam cow.
Promoting advantages and potentialities
Gia Lai province has many advantages to develop sustainable and effective agriculture. Temperate climate is one of the prerequisite factors to generate bumper crops. Together with climate advantages, Gia Lai also has a natural area of over 1.553 million ha of soil, divided into seven groups with 26 types of soil. With a large area of basalt soil, grey soil and alluvial soil for short-day and long-day industrial and fruit crops, agriculture has become a strong economic sector of Gia Lai province. Currently, the province has 76,367 ha of coffee, 73,218 ha of rubber, 20,568 ha of cashew trees, and 5,050 ha of pepper. These resources are enough for the province to develop an agricultural processing industry to serve both domestic and export markets. Gia Lai has a strong labour force for agricultural production development. By the end of 2008, the province had some 563,341 labourers working in the agricultural sector, in which 405,000 people were involved in agricultural, aquaculture and forestry production.

Based on local advantages and potentialities, the provincial authorities have introduced many right policies to develop the agriculture. The province encourages all economic sectors to invest in expanding agricultural and forestry production. With central and local financial sources, Gia Lai has built over 265 irrational works to water over 35,000 ha of crops and carried out many projects to rationalise crop and livestock structures. Remarkably, the province attaches much importance to farming activities, technological transfer, weather forecast, market forecast and disease prevention.

Besides, the province has called for investment capital for the agricultural sector. In parallel with agricultural production, the province also attracts capital for agricultural processing sectors such as sugarcane processing, manioc processing, animal feed production, etc.

Globalising Gia Lai farming products
With strong efforts to develop the agricultural sector from provincial authorities, in spite of economic slump, the production value of agriculture, forestry and fisheries in Gia Lai province in the first six months of 2009 still rose 7.91 % over the corresponding period in 2008. The total food output totalled 147,465 tonnes in the first six months, an increase of 5,428 tonnes over the same period of 2008. In addition to the cultivation sector, the husbandry and fishery sectors also advanced.

To pursue sustainable agricultural development, the Gia Lai People’s Committee is determined to double efforts to ensure food security, expand commercial agriculture, modernise and industrialise agricultural production, and rationalise the development of agricultural sector.

The province will encourage local farmers to adopt the Good Agriculture Practice (GAP) to boost the quality of local products. In addition, the provincial authorities also urge local producers to apply standards of importing nations to expand export. At present, the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development is compiling regulations on food safety, decentralisation of State management over agricultural and aquaculture quality and incentive policies on application of certified quality management systems such as VietGAP, GAP, ISO, Utz and 4C to widen the presence of Gia Lai agricultural production on the global markets.
